DESIGN | HYPERLOOP

The 2016 MITCSC Annual Meeting & Luncheon features Dr. Don Norman '57, currently Director of the UC San Diego Design Lab, as our keynote speaker on "Design as an Energizer," followed by a briefing by MIT's Hyperloop Team.

The downtown Los Angeles space for this event is graciously donated by Gensler as our event sponsor.  A buffet lunch, refreshments, and a hosted bar will be provided.

From our keynote speaker:

Design isn't what you think it is. It is a way of thinking and doing, not just for products, but for everything and anything. Design is more than making things look attractive or a trendy business topic. Design is a proven and necessary innovation strategy today.

Dr. Don Norman is Director of the Design Lab at the University of California, San Diego, cofounder of the Nielsen Norman Group, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, IDEO fellow, and former Vice President of Apple. He helps companies make products more enjoyable, understandable, and profitable. His books include Emotional Design, Living with Complexity, and an expanded, revised edition of Design of Everyday Things. And, of course, a course VI graduate of MIT. He lives at www.jnd.org.

This should be a lively and entertaining evening as Mr. Norman likes to involve the audience in his discussions.   Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear this world-renowned designer and author!

The MIT Hyperloop Team recently won the first round of the SpaceX Hyperloop contest at Texas A&M University.  This summer they are coming to Southern California to test a small-scale prototype.

From MIT News on the MIT Hyperloop Team (1 February 2016):

A team from MIT took top honors Saturday at a competition at Texas A&M University to design the Hyperloop, a high-speed transportation concept dreamed up by Tesla Motors and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

Beating out a field of more than 100 other teams from around the world, the group of MIT graduate students won the best overall design award for a vehicle, or pod, that will ride inside the Hyperloop, a system of tubes connecting major cities — or what Musk calls “a fifth mode of transportation.” They will now move on to build a small-scale prototype of their design and test it this summer on a track being built next to the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

The Hyperloop briefing will be provided by MIT team members Max Opgenoord SM'16 and Philippe Kirschen SM'16 -- both recent MIT Aero/Astro graduates.
